Tooth Sensitivity
Tooth sensitivity is a common problem experienced by people everyday. Sometimes it is hard to tell if the cause of the sensitivity is decay or something else. Usually, when the sesitivity is a quick "zinger" and is triggered by things such as hot, cold, sweet and acidic, then it is an issue easily resolved by over the counter products. To determine the direct cause of your sensitivity and the appropriate treatment, it is always best to consult with your dentist.
The cause of tooth sensitivity is the exposure of dentin. Denin contains several tubes which act as channels to the pulp or nerve of the tooth. When exposed, the tubes are stimulated by certain environmental changes such as temperature. The stimulation sends an impulse to the pulp, thus triggering a "zinger" or pain response in the tooth.
So what causes the dentin to become exposed?
There are several ways in which dentin can become exposed over time. The most common cause is gingival recession. Recession can occur due to age or somtimes, can occur from improper brushing. Dentin exposure can also be caused by acidic erosin of the enamel by acidic beverages and foods, tooth grinding, and a chip or fracture in the tooth.
While sensitive teeth can be bothersome, there are several things you can try at home to relieve your discomfort. When treating sensitivity, products either desensitize the nerve or will pack or block the dentin tubules. Some ingredients found in over the counter products are:
Potassium Nitrate: Toothpaste containing Postassium Nitrate will work to interfere with transmission of nerve impulses. Found in Sensodyne products
Stannous Fluoride: Blocks tubules by forming a smear layer over them. Found in many toothpastes, such as Crest Sensi-Repair
Oxalate Crystals: Reduce permeability of dentin and occlude the dentin tubules. Found in Crest Sensi-Stop Strips
When choosing a sensitivity relief product, it is important to know that it generally takes up to two weeks of use before you will see result. This means you must use only that toothpaste, twice daily for two weeks before you dismiss it as ineffective.
Crest Sensi-Stop Strips are a brand new product that have been showing amazing results. With this product you place a strip on your area of sensitivity one time. This one time application applies enough medicant to work for up to one month.
